Newcastle-based Swell magazine printed in Newcastle, by Novacastrians

Here at WHO we love working with local Newcastle businesses to provide them with the highest quality product to meet their unique needs.
Newcastle locals and avid magazine collectors, Kristy and Rebecca, launched their quarterly lifestyle print publication, Swell, in 2018. Their magazine aims to inspire locals and tourists alike by highlighting the hidden gems they have found across Newcastle and its surrounds.
The sisters also run Design Bug, a Newcastle-based graphic design studio, that they launched back in 2009. Working with a wide range of local businesses, Design Bug has been printing client projects with WHO on and off for about ten years.
As a start-up, Kristy and Rebecca focused on keeping costs low, so they chose to print Swell with a Sydney-based trade printer.
But as huge fans of Newcastle, and locals themselves, the dream was always to make Swell 100% locally produced.
When COVID struck, the previous printer was unable to deliver the goods.
‘We worked with Daniel from WHO to come up with a price that suited both of us.’
WHO has officially printed our first issue of Swell, and Kristy loved the experience.
‘Daniel was very accessible. Quick to quote and quick to respond to emails. Everything was on-time, or even ahead of schedule. We’re extremely happy we got to make the move to WHO.’
An added benefit of printing locally meant that she was able to visit the factory and see the printing process in action.
‘We could literally see the cover come off the press.’
WHO is ISO certified when it comes to colour management and if you’ve seen Swell, you’ll know it’s a vibrant, colourful publication. It was critical to Kristy that she was able to bring their photographer along to approve colour to make sure everything was exactly how they’d envisioned it.
Choosing WHO meant that our staff were the ones to deliver the finished product, not an impersonal courier service. Kristy says the boxes arrived in pristine condition, which is so important, especially when dealing with such a personal, passion project.
‘Daniel literally hand-delivered the first copy. You don’t get that anywhere else.’
‘For us, every print run is an extremely nerve-wracking process,’ says Kristy, ‘and WHO did everything to eliminate that.’
‘We’re usually scrambling to send out magazine copies, but this was the first deadline that didn’t end in a melt-down.’
‘If the relationship, quality, and service continue,’ says Kristy, ‘we won’t go anywhere else.’
